USA TODAY Sports’ Lindsay H. Jones says that even though the Cowboys had a surprisingly impressive 2016 season, there’s plenty of tough competition in the NFC East that could steal the division title in 2017.

The Dallas Cowboys might have taken a hit at training camp on Tuesday.

Defensive end Tyrone Crawford was carted off with an apparent right ankle injury. Executive vice president Stephen Jones told reporters that the team had “no idea” what the extent of the injury was.

Crawford sustained the injury while trying to tackle running back Ezekiel Elliott.

“Keep your fingers crossed,” Jones said, according to the Dallas Morning News. Hopefully, it will just be an ankle sprain. It’s obviously not a high ankle.

“He’s one of the leaders on this team, leader of the defensive line group. Certainly a huge part of this team.”

Crawford, 27, has started for the Cowboys for the last three seasons, recording 4.5 sacks in 2016.

The Cowboys already were facing other concerns along their defensive line, as David Irving and Damontre Moore will both be serving suspensions to open the season, while Randy Gregory remains banned indefinitely.

Cedric Thornton also left practice with a hamstring injury.
