Syrian Civil War: Opposition agrees to UN envoy’s 12-point proposal

The Syrian opposition Cairo platform has agreed to the 12 points on the country’s future proposed by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura to the participants of the Geneva intra-Syria talks for consideration at technical discussions.

Platform leader Firas Khalidi told reporters on Wednesday: “we agreed about these 12 points after amending them.”

In March, at the fourth round of the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva, de Mistura handed over to the delegations a non-paper of 12 points.

This includes, envisaging a “democratic and non-sectarian” Syria “based on citizenship, political pluralism, the rule of law, separation of powers, and judicial independence and the protection of national unity.

Others are recognition of cultural diversity of Syrian society, protection of public freedoms, and featuring transparent, inclusive and accountable governance, as well as effective measures to combat corruption.”

According to the non-paper, the Syrian people alone should determine the future of their country by democratic means, through the ballot box, and should have the exclusive right to choose their own political, economic and social system without external pressure or interference.

The non-paper envisioned support for the vulnerable and the poor “and safety and refuge for the displaced persons and refugees, including their right to return to their homes if they wish it.”

It rejects “terrorism, fanaticism extremism and sectarianism in all its forms.”

The seventh round of intra-Syrian talks in Geneva kicked off on Monday, with the delegation of the Syrian government, led by Syria’s Envoy to the UN in New York Bashar Jaafari, and three groups of the Syrian opposition, Riyadh-backed High Negotiations Committee, Cairo and Moscow platforms, gathering in the Swiss city.
